For those who want to know about focus (as I did), you cannot adjust the focus, but because of the small sensor size, everything appears to be in focus up to just a few feet away from the camera. You can adjust all of the settings (Shutter, iris, ISO, White Balance, resolution, frame rate) manually with the cell app while it is connected, or you can switch to auto mode.
I bought the Osmo at the end of May. I excitedly opened the camera but was unable to connect it to my iPod Touch or iPad (both new devices and both connect to my DJI Phantom 2). I thought that was weird, so over the course of 3 days I looked at a number of YouTube videos and the DJI troubleshooting website to fix the problem. I couldn't make any headway with the repair. My devices would either get an "unable to connect to the device" error or "the password is incorrect". Resetting to factory settings did nothing.
I got into a long email exchange with a service person at DJI. That resulted in more articles being sent to me for troubleshooting. None of those worked (they were mostly ones I had read before). Finally, about a week later, they asked for me to record a video showing the problem. Another length of time passed. I pushed them again about the issue and they asked for me to send it in to their repair center. They were upset with me for not buying their DJI Care plan, but I did not know that existed as it was not offered to me during the initial purchase. I had to fill out a form describing all of the things I had done to troubleshoot and the date of the purchase. Then, on my own dime (to the tune of almost $30) I shipped the camera to their repair center in California. I waited nearly 3 weeks. I got a few generic emails during that time telling me that the device had been received and was repaired and then was on its way back. When it got back to me, there was no documentation as to what was done to the Osmo to repair it. It didn't matter, it was sure to work, right? WRONG. I excitedly turned on my iPod and Osmo only to find that the problem was EXACTLY THE SAME - the camera did not appear in my wi-fi settings!
I wrote DJI and they put me through the lengthy troubleshooting process a second time. Remember, there were weeks of email exchanges the first time and that is what happened the second time. No one could tell me what had happened to my camera at the repair center. For all they knew, it was just returned to me. There was no documentation on their end about the repair. Finally, they offered to fix it again. For a second time, I put it in the mail (another $30) and waited 2.5 weeks for it to come back.
Guess what? There was no documentation as to what happened during the time the camera was at the repair center. The camera still does not work. It won't appear in my wi-fi settings. I have had a number of friends over with all kinds of iPhones and Android phones trying to connect to the Osmo (I figured it was just my devices not working), but they all failed to connect too.
So, now it is the beginning of August. I have had this camera for more than 2 months. I have yet to take a single picture or video with it and have spent $60 in shipping and dozens of hours troubleshooting.
I am quite disgusted with DJI. Their customer support is absolutely terrible. If you choose to buy this product (or any other DJI device), be ready for an agonizing and fruitless repair process that will not result in a working product.
As a teacher, I was hoping to use this camera with my film classes. Quite often, my recommendations for equipment lead to large purchases of dozens of units for our campuses. I can't recommend the Osmo and I can't recommend DJI as a company. Please don't support them with your hard earned dollars.
After installing the DJI GO app on my LG phone, everything appeared to be working great and I was absolutely stunned at how good the videos turned out. Then I went camping and the app would crash every few moments - what's up?
Returning home, the DJI Go app appeared to work well again. So I tried an experiment and turned off the cell data on my LG phone - sure enough the app started crashing again. Turned cell data back on and the app again worked properly. Why does the app need a cell connection? After all it is supposed to be just a camera right?
I reinstalled the app and noticed during installation that the app wanted access to just about everything on the phone - why? Anyway, now I am unable to use my LG phone with the Osmo when outside of cell range.
By the way - I still love the camera and use my NVIDEA Shield tablet with it when I camp. The app works well on the tablet no matter where I am.
I would not recommend this camera to anyone unwilling to suffer through the app or unwilling to attach a small tablet instead of a phone.
DJI - please fix the software....
